I remember the first time I heard “Steal My Kisses” by Ben Harper I was transfixed by the rhythmic hook that the song possessed, from its beat boxing intro to the slinky bass line and clean guitar hook. Fast forward a year later, and “Steal My Kisses” seems less of an original piece, due to hearing Bill Wither’s “Kissing My Love”. Both songs are great on their own and it’s an interesting piece of how music is informed by previous music.

After seeing Javelin play live at my school last Friday, I couldn’t help but be disappointed that they didn’t play this song, which is quite possibly their best and easily my favorite. I’m not usually one for instrumentals, especially in a genre thats not jazz, but the retro meets other-worldly flavor of “Intervales Theme” makes it a song that bears repeat. However The Hood Internet took this original and made it even better with the famous C.R.E.A.M. Theme, done for Anatomy Magazine. Check out the original and the remix below.
Self described as “Afro-beat, dancey pants, indie pop love music”, I can only assure you that Givers aren’t quite as twee Vampire Weekend as they let on to be. Rather Givers posses an extraordinary talent to incorporate recent influences like the former, along with acts like Dirty Projectors and MGMT to create a lush electro-afro-centric soundscape filled with chiming guitars, optimistic call and response vocals and warm synths. In “Up Up Up” you’d swear this band is a sum of all these other band parts, but rather its just one of many standouts on their debut LP In Light.
