Can’t call with a subway token, anyway the phones are all broken, I wish you were here, better yet I wish I was there with you”

Wilco has come out with another great album, this year’s The Whole Love which almost plays out like a greatest hits of what they’ve played through the years, offering a little bit of everything that people like about them. On “Capitol City” they turn a Sky Blue Sky-esque Randy Newman styled jaunt into a formidable song with some great harmonies, great arrangement choices and some of the sonic experimentation that made them so great on Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.  A rare song that makes it 4:00 run time seem short.  If you wish to keep the track for yourself, right-click on the link down below, but I highly recommend the whole album.

Capitol City- Wilco

This Massachusetts born and Brooklyn based songwriter has quite the story, going from painting murals in wealthy New Yorker’s apartments to making a stunning debut before teaming up with a new band called Here We Go Magic and releasing a self titled record and more recently Pigeons in 2010.  Yet his latest release Don’t Act Like You Don’t Care  has a stunning retro and intimate quality to it, helped by his trusty old 4-track and some wonderful production values. Here, on “More Than Muscle” his lyrical and musical talent is at full swing with a melody line that is so catchy it is beguiling.

What’s that you say? You’ve heard of Luke Temple?? Really??? Well congratulations hipster, now go celebrate with your PBR and Parliament’s, preferably to this retro blissed fuzz kissed number that has enough syncopation to stop you in your tracks.  If you like it enough that you want it bad, right click on the link below, and buy the damn album.

The Muckrakers are probably a band you’ve never heard of, somehow fame has eluded this group out of Louisville, Kentucky.  Proof that it’s hard to make it big out there, even if you create pop masterpieces like this one. “Beautiful Goodbye” is a swaggering riff-led number featuring Rob Carpenter’s great vocals and a great little narrative to boot.

Beatles For Sale- The Beatles

When it comes to ranking Beatles albums, everyone (I included) seems to give Beatles For Sale a blind eye, perhaps due to the dearth of originals on it, the fact that it wasn’t released as an album until the CD remasters in 1987 and that it came between two great albums A Hard Day’s Night and Help!. However two of their best songs start the album, "No Reply" and “I’m A Loser” which finds Lennon at his early peak as a songwriter, both charismatic and insecure, and quite capable of making a great melody.  Despite all the hoopla that always surrounds the sound quality of any recording by The Beatles, early or otherwise, these two are recorded to perfection and are fine examples of The Beatles already perfecting the pop songwriting form.
