Self described as “Afro-beat, dancey pants, indie pop love music”, I can only assure you that Givers aren’t quite as twee Vampire Weekend as they let on to be.  Rather Givers posses an extraordinary talent to incorporate recent influences like the former, along with acts like Dirty Projectors and MGMT to create a lush electro-afro-centric soundscape filled with chiming guitars, optimistic call and response vocals and warm synths.  In “Up Up Up” you’d swear this band is a sum of all these other band parts, but rather its just one of many standouts on their debut LP In Light.

Up Up Up- Givers

I’ll be the first to admit I slept on Islands first two LP’s Return to the Sea and Arm’s Way but I happily stumbled upon Vapours the other day (yes that is indeed the charming British way of spelling vapor) and to my surprise I found this little gem as the title track no less.

To be clear, Islands aren’t usually the type to do a standard rock number but it works well here, with a rhythm guitar and bass groove that would have found itself happily on any Talking Heads number, while the vocals run something near The Strokes, if only slightly more discernable.  Enjoy the music and right click the link below if you feel like downloading it.

Vapours- Islands

I’m not one to usually promote my own songwriting, but I was comfortable enough with this song to share it with everybody I knew, which is a first for me in many respects.  Songwriting is a real interesting art, sometimes it comes spur of the moment, like the melody, and sometimes it’s truly informed by past experiences, which gave meaning to these words.

In essence, no relationship is perfect, and often the true feelings you have for someone get lost in the shuffle of everything else going on in your life, and this is sort of a tribute to that, two people realizing they loved who they lost, even though they understand it can never be again. I Loved You (Demo)- Hugh Willett

Can’t call with a subway token, anyway the phones are all broken, I wish you were here, better yet I wish I was there with you”

Wilco has come out with another great album, this year’s The Whole Love which almost plays out like a greatest hits of what they’ve played through the years, offering a little bit of everything that people like about them. On “Capitol City” they turn a Sky Blue Sky-esque Randy Newman styled jaunt into a formidable song with some great harmonies, great arrangement choices and some of the sonic experimentation that made them so great on Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.  A rare song that makes it 4:00 run time seem short.  If you wish to keep the track for yourself, right-click on the link down below, but I highly recommend the whole album.
